Report

TWO goals in the final 19 minutes sank Derby County at Barnsley this afternoon in a match in which they held the upper hand for long periods.

The 2-0 defeat leaves Derby without a win in the Championship this season and heaps more pressure on manager Paul Jewell (pictured).
He is still waiting for his first league win since taking charge at the end of November – 28 matches ago.

Barnsley goalkeeper Luke Steele was named man of the match while the home side’s goals came from Iain Hume on 71 minutes and Stephen Foster after 82.

Derby played in their new third strip of blue and white stripes and made virtually all of the running in a goalless first half.

Paul Green, who hit the winner at Preston in midweek, steered a cross from Przemyslaw Kazmierczak wide and saw a low shot saved by Steele.
A powerful surge by Miles Addison ended with Kazmierczak’s drive flashing narrowly wide while Rams keeper remained untroubled at the other end.

Green’s energy and willingness to work up and down the right and Addison strength in midfield were features of Derby’s display in the opening 45 minutes, but Kris Commons was wasteful time and again when in good positions.

The pattern was the same in the second half as Steele kept Derby at bay.
He pushed out a low shot from Rob Hulse and another from Commons before using his feet to keep out the follow up from Kamierczak with his feet. Steele then plunged to his right to hold onto Villa’s shot.
But Barnsley took the lead against the run of play.

Brian Howard’s hoisted free kick into the area was only half clear and the ball dropped to Hume who thumped an unstoppable volley from 20 yards high past Carroll.

The home side’s second goal came eight minutes from time, when Foster met Hume’s corner to power a header past Carroll.

Derby have now gone 36 league games without a win, a wretched run, and Barnsley fans, enjoying the moment, chanted: ’you’re getting sacked in the morning’ at Jewell.
